History

A public library with 140 magazines got opened in Mladá Boleslav in 1901. It awoke a great interest among the citizens and this made the town to a conclusion to found its own library. In the same year, on 4th October, a public library got opened in a rented flat of Mr. Glasr in Nr.39 in the Staroměstské square. After several moves, in 1909, „The Public Reading Room and Library of Mladá Boleslav“acquired premises in an all-boys school in the Komenského square.

The books fund and activities kept widening and so it was decided in the 1930´s to move the library into the newly built premises of the Business Academy. Here, the library had its seat from 1936.

In 1951 the District national committee (ONV) became the owner of the library and new services for public district libraries became available. The local car industry and town development in the 1960s and 1970s led to an increase of users of library services, book funds and other activities

The library has by far run out of free space. At the same time the requirements of the building owner, the former Secondary School of Economics, grew steadily. That is why the town and district authorities put an effort and financial means together in 1990 and built a library building suitable for offering modern library services, at that time after many years one of the first buildings in the Czech Republic built for library purposes. In June 1994 the building was given over to public use with already partially automated processes.

In 1997, after several decades, the Town of Mladá Boleslav becomes the founder of the library once again. The public library provides its services to the district on a contract basis. A public internet connection was established. In 1998 a full automatization of the library got completed and a new system for book fund protection against theft was installed.

In 2001, at the 100th founding anniversary, the library began to cooperate with the „Small-Carpathian Library“ in Pezinok – one of the partner towns of Mladá Boleslav.
